The Name of Jesus (AM)

Scripture Reading:  Philippians 2:9–11

Introduction

A.  The first recorded apostolic miracle is the healing of a lame beggar at the Beautiful Gate of the temple (Acts 3:1–9).

B.  Peter makes it clear to the crowd that this man had been healed by no power other than that of the name of Jesus Christ.

Discussion

I.  There is power in the name of Jesus.

A.  The name of Jesus has the power to bring about physical healing (Acts 3:12–16; 4:8–12).

B.  The name of Jesus also has the power to bring about the salvation of the soul (Acts 4:12; 2:21, 38; 10:43).

C.  The name of Jesus has been an inspiration to many (Acts 26:9; 9:15–16, 27; 15:26; 21:13).

II.  The world may despise it, but the name will never lose its power.

A.  The Sanhedrin could not keep the apostles from preaching in the name of Jesus (Acts 4:18; 5:28, 41).

B.  Saul of Tarsus went from persecuting the name of Jesus to preaching it (Acts 26:9; 22:16).

C.  Many have worn the name gladly even though it has led at times to suffering (Acts 11:26; 5:41; Luke 21:12, 19; 1 Peter 4:12–16).

Conclusion

A.  There is still power in the name of Jesus, and that is why we still pray in His name (John 15:16; 16:23–26).

B.  Just as there is still power in the name of Jesus to save us, even so there is still no power or salvation in any other.
