The Ascension (PM)

Scripture Reading:  Acts 1:9-11; Luke 24:50-53

 Introduction:

I.  One of the noticeable facts in the book of Acts is the change in disposition and attitude of the apostles.

II.  Luke 24:52 informs us that they returned to Jerusalem with “great joy,” after the ascension of Jesus.

III.  The events preceding His ascension have taken place to prepare the disciples not only for this event, but also for the days to follow.

IV.  Significant knowledge was gained by the things that happened here, at Bethany.

Discussion:

I.  The Ascent (Luke 24:51; Acts 1:9)

A.  The event occurs after leading them to Bethany. (Luke 24:50)

B.  In the opening scene He is blessing them with lifted hands. (24:50)

C.  This is not a vision or dream; they watch as He is taken up. (Acts 1:9)

D.  His upward rise is much more than a physical ascent.

1.  He ascended to the right hand of God. (Mark 16:19; Acts 7:55-56;  Hebrews 10:12; 1 Peter 3:22)

2.  He has all authority. (Matthew 28:18; Ephesians 1:19-23)

E.  His return to heaven placed responsibility upon the apostles. (1:6-8)

II.  The Cloud (Acts 1:9)

A.  Jesus is received by a cloud. (1:9)

B.  God’s presence often revealed by a cloud. (Exodus 13:21; 24:16; 40:34; 1 Kings 8:10; Matthew 17:5)

C.  The cloud indicates God’s approval and acceptance of the earthly work of Jesus. (Imagine the reunion in heaven upon His return.)

D.  Jesus was received out of their sight. (1:9)

III.  The Look (1:10-11)

A.  Watching Jesus as He went up. (1:10)

B.  Gazing into heaven. (1:11)

1.  There would have been a flood of memories of what He did here.

C.  There is more to do than just gazing into heaven and the past.

Conclusion:

The apostles are now filled with joy and are continually praising God. (Luke 24:52-53) This event should have the same effect upon me.
