Scripture Reading: Luke 24:44–53
Introduction
A. It seems that just about every place prides itself in being the birthplace of some famous person or idea.
B. Jerusalem marks the place where the Lord’s church began and where the glorious gospel of Christ was first proclaimed.
Discussion
I. In Jerusalem the fullness of the gospel was revealed.
A. Proof of Christ’s resurrection was seen there (Acts 1:3).
B. The power of God was granted to the apostles in Jerusalem (Acts 2:11–12; 3:12; 4:7–10).
C. God’s promise was fulfilled there (Acts 1:4; 2:39).
D. The preaching of the gospel of peace began there also (Luke 24:47; Acts 2:38).
E. The persecution of the church found its beginning in Jerusalem as well (Acts 5:40; 7:57–60; 8:1; 9:1–2).
II. What began in Jerusalem isn’t finished just yet.
A. There is still power in the gospel (Romans 1:16).
B. We must continue to preach the Word (2 Timothy 2:2).
C. The world will continue to persecute those involved in the Lord’s work (Acts 14:22; 2 Timothy 3:10–17).
Conclusion
A. When future generations look back at ours, will they see that we carried on the legacy begun in Jerusalem?
B. For thousands, a new life began on Pentecost in Jerusalem, and if you are still in your sins, you can begin your new life today.
