Scripture Reading: Hosea 12:2-6
Introduction
A. The Bible tells us the story of Jacob wrestling with an angel as he prepared to be reunited with his brother Esau, from whom he had fled for his life 20 years before.
B. His opponent gave Jacob the new name of Israel, stating that he had struggled with God and men and had prevailed.
Discussion
I. Jacob’s life was always marked with conflict.
A. He was literally born in conflict with his brother Esau (Genesis 25:22, 26).
B. This conflict only grows as the boys grew older (Genesis 25:29–34; 27:1–46).
C. Jacob found conflict again in the house of Laban (Genesis 30:25–43; 31:2–3, 26–32).
II. Things seem to change for Jacob after his encounter with God.
A. His name is changed (Genesis 32:28; 35:10).
B. He is affected physically as well (Genesis 32:31).
C. Most importantly, his relationship with the Almighty is profoundly changed (cf. Genesis 27:20; 28:13; 31:42; 32:9; 33:18–20).
III. Jacob is not the only one to wrestle with God.
A. Many prophets did so (Exodus 3–4; Jonah 1:1–3; Habakkuk 1:2–17).
B. There were also apostles who struggled with the Almighty (2 Corinthians 12:7–10; Matthew 16:22–23; Acts 10:14).
Conclusion
A. Although no one can struggle with God and defeat Him, there is great benefit in allowing ourselves to be defeated by Him.
B. He will give courage for your fears, strength for your weakness, and light for your doubts.
