Scripture Reading: Acts 14:14-18
Introduction:
I. Questions play a significant role in our lives every day and are asked for various reasons.
A. The acquisition of information or knowledge would obviously be a major reason for questions.
B. Others, such as rhetorical questions, are asked to make us think.
1. Jesus asked many of these questions: Matthew 6:27; 11:16; 16:13; 16:26
II. The question in our text today is a “why” question.
III. The question, “why are you doing these things,” can be asked of each of us today, but requires “these things” to be defined.
A. The things you consider most important in life are under consideration.
IV. Paul gives assistance in answering this kind of question.
Discussion:
I. Consider man in relation to God (vs. 15).
A. God is superior to man in power.
B. God is much better than man.
C. God is much smarter than man.
II. Consider earthly things in relation to God (vs. 15)
A. Paul is calling for them to compare wood and stone to God.
B. We all have a limited amount of time and must decide what things are most important.
C. When all is said and done priorities are established simply by the decisions we make and are not to be compromised.
III. Consider God’s eternal presence (vs. 16-17).
A. God has been patient with man for a long time.
B. God does good even when man walks in his own way. (vs 16-17)
Conclusion:
When considering your relationship with God, make sure to answer the question of “why.” When we answer the question with an understanding of exactly who God is, and a determination to make Him first in life, then we will recognize His eternal presence.
