The Tie that Binds (PM)

Scripture Reading:  1 Thessalonians 1-3

Introduction:

I.  The history of the establishment of the church at Thessalonica is recorded in Acts chapter 17 and occurs during much persecution.

II.  Because of his own life being in jeopardy, Paul is forced to leave, but his heart is still with them.

III.  Paul does not know how they are doing, since his departure, and is deeply troubled as a result.

IV.  When Timothy brings good news (1 Thessalonians 3:6) Paul writes to the Thessalonians  with some of the most emotional and compassionate words in scripture.

V.  When reading these verses, the bond between both parties is truly amazing and we would do well, to not only study it, but also understand how it was created.

Discussion:

I.  The Tie that binds is based upon faith.

A.  The faith of the Thessalonians is described in 1:2-10.

1.  It was a work (1:3)

2.  It was an example (1:7).

3.  It was known everywhere (1:8).

4.  It produced repentance, service and anticipation of heaven (1:9-10).

B.  The faith of the Thessalonians strengthened Paul (3:6-10).

II.  The way the gospel was preached contributed to this bond (2:1-12).

A.  Preached despite conflict (2:2).

B.  Preached without error, uncleanness or deceit (2:3).

C.  Preached not to please men, but God (2:4-6).

D.  Preached in love (2:7-12).

III.  The way the gospel was received contributed to this bond (1:6; 2:13-15).

A.  Received by hearing Paul (2:13).

B.  It was welcomed or accepted (2:13).

C.  Received not as the word of men, but the word of God (2:13).

D.  Received during affliction and accompanied with joy (1:6; 2:14-15).

Conclusion:

The tie that bound Paul to the Thessalonians was so strong that he would say, when Christ returns, they were his hope, joy or crown of rejoicing (2:17-20).
