Scripture Reading: Matthew 16:13-21
Introduction
I. A typical study of these verses would include an explanation of some very important truths.
A. The foundation of the church is upon Christ, the Son of God.
B. The keys to the kingdom are here promised to Peter and subsequently used on the day of Pentecost. (Acts 2)
II. These are very important lessons to learn but there is much more that should be emphasized.
III. The setting for this discussion is in the region of Caesarea Philippi, which is located 25 miles north of the Sea of Galilee.
IV. Found herein are two questions, two answers and an explanation of the 2nd answer.
Discussion
I. The first question is, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” (vs. 13)
A. The question is general and does not require a personal evaluation in giving an answer.
B. The question is about what others say.
C. The disciples answer that people are saying different things about Him and they are readily able to give this answer.
D. The answer is followed by another question from Jesus, without any comment about their answer.
II. The second question is, “But who do you say that I am?” (vs. 15)
A. Peter, in typical fashion, answers, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” (vs.16)
B. This question is personal and is the most important question that has ever be asked.
C. The answer we give to this question will absolutely affect everything about us.
III. The second answer is so right and exact that Jesus explains just how important this answer is.
A. To confess Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God brings blessing.
B. This answer comes by revelation from God.
C. This answer is the foundation upon which we can have a relationship with God, through His church.
