Scripture Reading: Matthew 22:41–46
Introduction
A. We have been looking for shadows of Jesus and finding them scattered across nearly every page of the Old Testament.
B. Although there is no place in the New Testament where Jesus is directly compared to David, the connections are obvious.
Discussion
I. There are many striking similarities between David and Jesus.
A. They are of similar origins (1 Samuel 16:1; Luke 2:4).
B. Both were underestimated, especially by their very nearest relations (1 Samuel 16:11; 17:31–33; Luke 4:22; John 7:5).
C. Both were hated without due cause (1 Samuel 18:8; Psalms 35:1, 19; John 15:18–19).
D. Both were anointed by God (1 Samuel 16:13–14; Zechariah 6:12–13; Luke 4:18; 3;22).
E. Both sought to do God’s will (1 Samuel 13:14; John 5:30).
II. The Son of David is greater.
A. Jesus is both the Root and the Offspring of David (Revelation 22:16; Matthew 22:41–46; Romans 1:4).
B. Jesus fulfilled the words that David could not (Acts 2:22–36; Matthew 27:46).
C. Jesus never fails (Hebrews 4:15; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 13:5).
Conclusion
A. There must have been generations of people who longed for the days when David had ruled a united and prosperous Israel.
B. We have a far greater king today in Jesus, the Son of David, to whom even the greatest monarch himself will bow in reverence on the last day.
