Psalm 39:4-5
Introduction:
1. This is another phrase that is true but misapplied.
2. We do only have one life to live, so how we live it is paramount.
3. The Lord and the world use this true statement in diametrically opposed ways, and our souls depend on how we apply it.
Discussion:
I. YOLO-Wildly Popular Among Youths
A. “Often used as a hashtag on Twitter to highlight exciting events or to excuse irresponsible behaviors” (knowyourmeme.com)
B. “A phrase that prioritizes action, and often impulsivity, over contemplation in pursuit of life experiences” (The Free Dictionary).
C. “Expressing the view that one should make the most of the present moment without worrying about the future, and often used as a rationale for impulsive or reckless behavior” (Dictionary.com)
II. Carpe Diem-Closely Related to YOLO
A. A Latin phrase meaning “seize the day.”
B. A philosophy of life that says, “Enjoy yourself while you can.”
C. At its core, this is a hedonistic philosophy of life.
III. Redeem The Time-The Biblical Corrective
A. The Bible agrees that we only live once (Genesis 3:19; Psalms 39:4-5; Job 9:25; 14:1; James 4:13-15).
B. It agrees we should seize the day/redeem the time (Ephesians 5:16).
C. The difference is in the interpretation of seizing the day.
D. The world says you only live once so live wild and free.
E. The Lord says you only live once so live for me (Joshua 24:14-15; Ecclesiastes 12:13-14; John 9:4; Ephesians 5:11, 15-17; Romans 13:11-14).
Conclusion:
1. The world is right that we all have but one life to live.
2. Where they err so dangerously is in their use of this singular life.
3. When this one life is over, we all must stand before the judgment seat of Christ to give account of our deeds (Romans 2:4-10; 14:10; 2 Corinthians 5:10).
