2 Corinthians 5:9-21
Introduction:
1. For good reason, much of our study of the Bible is about what we do or do not do.
2. This morning’s discussion is about why we do or do not do those things.
3. This is critical for many reasons as it helps us look inwardly and consider what our “center” is, the force that drives us to be who we are and do what we do.
Discussion:
I. The Reckoning (5:9-13)
A. This section details Paul’s reckoning of his primary aim in life, pleasing the Lord always.
B. The immediate catalyst was the day of reckoning when we all give account to Christ (5:10-11), but there is so much more in this context.
II. The Reconciliation (5:16-21)
A. The other bookend highlights God’s intended ends for all who stand in judgment, reconciliation.
B. In Christ, He made us a new creation (5:17) by way of reconciliation at the cost of His Son.
C. The result of Christ’s sacrifice is that we who were lost sinners become God’s righteousness (5:21).
III. The Response (5:14-15)
A. In the center, between the reckoning and the reconciliation, is the proper response to His love.
B. The “center” for those reconciled by Christ, the engine that drives us, is the love of Christ.
C. Knowing that He died and rose for us, we ought to respond by daily living for Him (5:15).
Conclusion:
1. Though we must focus on what to do or not do, let us never lose sight of why we do or do not do the things we find in His will.
2. This understanding, or the lack thereof, will often be the determining factor in whether we continue in faithfulness or if we give up.
