Proverbs 6:16-19; Revelation 21:8
Introduction:
1. This question hurts as it implicates family/brethren speaking lies against another.
2. The question stated that the individuals in question did not take “little white lies” seriously and had caused harm by telling them.
3. Hopefully this discussion will jar any such misguided attitudes loose for good.
Discussion:
I. God’s Disdain for Lying
A. He could scarcely condemn anything more plainly.
B. Lying and liars are abominable in God’s sight (Psa. 5:6; Prov. 6:16-19; 12:22; Hos. 4:1-2; Rev. 22:15).
C. When stating plainly that all liars will burn in the lake of fire, the Lord made no exception for those telling “little white lies” (Rev. 21:8).
II. The Father of Lies
A. The foundation for God’s hardline against lying is its origin, the father of lies, Satan (Jn. 8:44).
B. He used a lie to bring death and destruction upon God’s crown of creation (Gen. 3).
III. Children of Our Chosen Father
A. Our choice to tell the truth or to lie is more than a matter of the immediate impact the lie has.
B. It is a matter of our spiritual parentage:
1. Choosing falsehood over truth makes one a child of Satan (Jn. 8:41-47; 2 Th. 2:9-12; 1 Jn. 3:10).
2. God’s children imitate Him (Eph. 5:1; 1 Pt. 1:13-16), and He cannot lie (Tit. 1:2; Heb. 6:18).
Conclusion:
1. Worldly people lying is a shock to no one, but God’s children doing so is appalling.
2. Being God’s children demands practicing righteousness, and all who refuse are not His children (1 Jn. 2:29; 3:10); therefore, we must put away every lie of every kind.
