The Transfiguration of Jesus (AM)

Scripture Reading:  Matthew 17:1-13; Mark 9:1-13; Luke 9:28-36

 Introduction:

I.  Certainly, one of the most amazing events in the life of Christ occurs on the Mount of Transfiguration.

II.  Because of the recent revelation conveyed to the disciples, Jesus sees their need for information, for strength and for direction.

III.  Have things recently happened to you that have created doubt, complacency or dissatisfaction with your faith?

IV.  Herein is a mountain top experience that we all can use.

Discussion:

I.  This story provides an abundance of information

A.  The context, before, during and after His transfiguration, includes statements concerning the suffering and death of Jesus.

1.  Matthew 16:21; Luke 9:31; Matthew 17:12.

2.  If you are struggling in faith, be reminded that He died for you.

B.  We will live on after our physical body dies.

1.  Moses and Elijah are still alive and so are our loved ones.  (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14)

2.  We will still have our identity after death.

C.  Our authority is Jesus Christ.

1.  “This is my beloved son. Hear Him!” (Mark 9:7; Luke 9:35)

II.  This story gives a picture of the glory of Jesus. (Matthew 17:2; Mark 9:3)

A.  While praying, His appearance and clothing changed. (Luke 9:29)

B.  Moses and Elijah also appeared in glory. (Luke 9:31)

C.  We, too, will have a new body. (1 Corinthians 15:49; Philippians 3:21; 1 John 3:2)

III.  This story points us in the right direction. (Matthew 17:8; Mark 9:8; Luke 9:36)

A.  The voice from the cloud caused great fear in the disciples. (Matthew 17:6)

B.  When the voice stopped the disciples were alone with Jesus.

C.  The touch of Jesus dispelled their fear. (Matthew 17:8)

Conclusion:

Our knowledge of the future and hope of being in glory with Christ are necessary components to remaining faithful until death.
