The Story of Pentecost (PM)

By:  Dennis Pierce

Scripture Reading:  Acts 2

Introduction:

I.  Many single events in history have drastically changed the future of the world.

II.  A list of the significant events in the Bible would include the creation, the first sin, the flood, Mt. Sinai, Solomon’s Temple, the birth, the life, the death, the burial and the resurrection of Christ.

III.  When the day of Pentecost had fully come, the world was given a powerful demonstration of a new “way” for man to have a relationship with God. (Hebrews 10:20)

IV.  This day, accompanied by the power of Holy Spirit, by the power of prophecy fulfilled, by the power of preaching and by the power of salvation, has forever changed the world.

Discussion:

I.  Pentecost began with the power of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:1-13)

A.  Jesus had promised them this power would come from the Father. (John 14:15-16; 25-26; Luke 24:49; Acts 1:7-9)

B.  The Holy Spirit did not come quietly nor unseen.

1.  There was a sound as of a rushing mighty wind and there was an appearance of tongues, as of fire.

2.  There was the miraculous ability to speak in languages never before known.

II.  Pentecost made known the power of fulfilled prophecy. (Acts 2:16-21)

A.  Peter made it clear that “this” was fulfillment of prophecy. (2:16)

B.  John the Baptist preached that the kingdom of God was at hand.

C.  Jesus said he would build His church. (Matthew 16:18-19)

III.  Pentecost demonstrates the power of preaching. (Acts 2:22-40)

A.  Paul describes the power of preaching in 1 Corinthians 1:18-25.

B.  Peter’s sermon here is very powerful, especially vs. 22-24.

C.  His preaching is direct and to the point. (vs. 23 & 36)

IV.  Pentecost resulted in the salvation of thousands. (Acts 2:37-47)

A. The important question was, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

Conclusion:

“save yourselves from this crooked generation.” (vs. 40)
