1 Corinthians 15:33
Introduction:
1. This spring-cleaning session is very broad and difficult to implement.
2. We are surrounded by influences of various kinds; some are subtly harmful to our spiritual lives, so discernment is key (Hebrews 5:12-14).
Discussion:
I. An Important Definition
A. Communication: GR. homilia, “social intercourse, association, engagement in talk: whether conversation or a speech” (BDAG).
B. Paul’s warning applies to all channels of communication.
II. The Leavening Effect of Influences
A. Many Christians convince themselves they can linger near ungodly influences and not be affected spiritually.
B. The Scriptures argue otherwise (Exodus 23:33; Deuteronomy 7:1-4; Proverbs 6:27; 13:20; 1 Corinthians 5:6; 15:33; Galatians 5:9; cf. 1 Kings 3:1-2; 11:1-8; Galatians 2:11-13).
C. We must not intertwine our lives with unbelievers (2 Corinthians 6:14-18).
D. We do not hide from them (Matthew 28:18-20; John 17:15-16; 1 Corinthians 5:9-10), but we must avoid their influence (Matthew 16:5-12; Romans 13:14).
III. Purging Out the Old Leaven
A. The Corinthians were apparently proud of their “sophistication” in maintaining fellowship with a brother in sin (1 Corinthians 5:1-2).
B. Instead of abhorring evil (Romans 12:9), the world’s influence was choking out the gospel’s influence (Luke 8:14).
C. They, like Israel before, had to drive these influences out completely to be what they were intended to be (1 Corinthians 5:6-8).
Conclusion:
1. Satan has a wide array of influencers in our world.
2. He is picking off many once faithful Christians by their influence.
3. We cannot take the loose view of these evil influences, but rather we must purge out the old leaven and be newly formed as He intends.
