My Lord and My God: Portraits of Jesus in John - The True Vine (PM)

John 15:1-8

Introduction:

1. This portrait vividly demonstrates several essential truths if we are to live vibrant, productive lives in Christ.

2. The central theme is our dependence on the Lord to so produce.

Discussion:

I. The Vine/Vineyard Imagery

A. God used this image of Israel repeatedly in the OT (Psalms 80:8-16; Isaiah 5:1-7; Jeremiah 2:21; 12:10-17; Ezekiel 15:1-8; 17:1-10; 19:10-14; Hosea 10:1-2).

B. Sadly, Israel refused to produce the intended yield, so God had to punish her (Isaiah 5:1-7; Jeremiah 2:21; cf. Matthew 21:33-46).

II. The True Vine and the Branches

A. Unlike the failed vine of Israel, Jesus is the true vine producing the fruit the Vinedresser intended; vines exist solely to produce fruit.

B. Unproductive branches are removed and burned up (15:2a, 6).

C. Productive branches are pruned, maximizing production (15:2b, 8); no doubt this pruning involves spiritual discipline (Hebrews 12:10-11).

III. The Dependence of and Assurance to the Branches

A. As in the physical realm, so in the spiritual, any branch severed from the vine dies helplessly, so we must stay connected to Him (15:4-6).

B. His words in us maintain this connection (15:7; Colossians 1:6-10; 3:16).

C. Connected to this warning and exhortation is assurance that the true Vine will sustain the branches abiding in Him (15:7; cf. 14:13-14).

Conclusion:

1. This last I am statement of Jesus reminds us again how vital it is that He abide in us and we in Him.

2. If we pursue this connection always, we are sure to thrive and produce, bringing glory to God and surety to our souls.
