John 4:28-30, 39-42
Introduction:
1. With Christmas just around the corner, the minds of masses are focused on the birth of the Lord Jesus this time of year.
2. He and His will must be at the center of every day of our lives.
3. Much of His will is that we share His will with others like the Samaritan woman who met Him at the well and found living water.
Discussion:
I. Receiving The Living Water
A. En route to Galilee from Judea, Jesus “…needed to go through Samaria” (John 4:4; Lit. had to go through) no doubt to facilitate this interaction.
B. Jews typically went the long way around to avoid Samaria (cf. 4:9).
C. This woman had no idea her life would forever change that day.
D. Jesus gave her “living water” with its incumbent blessings: (John 4:7-15)
1. The one who drinks it thirsts no more (John 4:13-14).
2. It becomes a fountain springing up into everlasting life.
E. He then proved to her that He is the Messiah (John 4:16-26).
II. The Samaritan Woman’s Response
A. She was so excited about the encounter that she left her water pot, ran back to town to share the good news with her peers (John 4:28-30).
B. Her efforts brought salvation to many of her people (John 4:39-42).
III. The Sin of the Desert
A. While she was leading her peers to the water of life, Jesus taught His disciples of God’s designs for harvesting souls (John 4:31-38).
B. A Bedouin shepherd told a persistent Christian he understood his zeal as he knew he just did not want to commit the sin of the desert.
C. He defined it for the befuddled Christian saying, “The sin of the desert is knowing where there is water but refusing to tell others.”
Conclusion:
1. The water of life wells up in those who partake of it, becoming a fountain that quenches the soul’s thirst with life eternal (cf. Matthew 5:6).
2. We would not dare allow a person to thirst to death while we withheld the route to the spring; will we let a soul thirst to death in this way?
