Psalm 90
Introduction:
1. This Psalm contrasts the grandeur of the eternal God with the frailty and full dependence of mortal humanity.
2. In it, we learn the secret to faithfulness in every circumstance.
Discussion:
I. A Prayer of Moses, The Man of God
A. Moses was faithful despite the challenges (Hebrews 3:1-2; 11:24-29).
B. His meekness/humility was the catalyst for this (Numbers 12:3).
II. God’s Eternality and Our Mortality (vv. 1-6, 10)
A. This contrast puts us in our place and promotes meekness.
B. We are here so briefly (vv. 4-6, 10; Isaiah 40:6-8; James 4:14).
C. God’s people are sojourners on earth (vv. Leviticus 25:23; 1 Peter 2:11).
D. In and by Him we find permanence (vs. 1; Hebrews 11:13-16).
III. The Place of God’s Wrath (vv. 3, 7-11)
A. God’s holiness demands justice (Exodus 34:6-7).
B. He sees all our deeds (vs. 8; Psalms 139:7-8; Proverbs 15:3; Hebrews 4:13).
C. And will judge them all (Ecclesiastes 12:14; Romans 2:5-6; 2 Corinthians 5:10).
D. This knowledge prompts faithfulness (Ecclesiastes 12:13; 2 Peter 3:11-12).
IV. Teach Us To Number Our Days (vv. 12-17)
A. Moses laid bare the proper response:
1. Know our finitude and finality (vs. 12a; 2 Peter 3:11-12).
2. Gain a heart of wisdom (vs. 12b; Proverbs 1:7; Ephesians 5:15-17).
3. Plead for God’s mercy (vv. 13-17; Psalms 51:1-4; Luke 18:13).
B. Seeing our dependence should generate humility such as this.
Conclusion:
1. Though we are sojourners and pilgrims here on earth, God is our refuge, our dwelling place (KJV) here on this earth.
2. May we ever be sure to approach life with the humility of Moses by numbering our days and applying our hearts to wisdom.
3. Then we may confidently approach the Father of mercies and God of all comfort with our needs (Lamentations 3:22; 2 Corinthians 1:3; Hebrews 4:14-16).
