Exodus 3:13-14
Introduction:
1. Though we have a working definition of God’s eternality, the concept is still beyond full human comprehension (Isaiah 40:28).
2. What He has revealed of this astonishing reality is sufficient to produce a life-changing sense of awe and wonder.
Discussion:
I. Defining the Eternal
A. Having neither beginning nor end of existence.
B. Having always existed; the eternal cause (Hebrews 3:4).
C. Independent of time or its conditions (2 Corinthians 4:16-18).
II. I AM That I AM
A. Moses was to tell the Israelites, “I AM” sent him (Exodus 3:13-14).
B. The primary meaning of this term is “to exist” making God “the existing One” who cannot not exist, the necessary Being.
C. Thomas Aquinas dubbed this the First Cause or Uncaused Cause.
III. Surveying The Doctrine of the Eternal God
A. This doctrine runs through the Bible from cover to cover.
B. It is the foundation of His other infinite attributes: omnipotence, omniscience, omnipresence, etc.
C. Notice some descriptions of God in this vein:
1. He who inhabits eternity (Isaiah 57:15)
2. Whose goings forth are from everlasting (Micah 5:2)
3. Who will always exist (Genesis 21:33; Isaiah 40:28; Romans 16:26)
4. The Ancient of Days and judge of the world (Daniel 7:9-11; Acts 17:30-31; Revelation 20:11-15).
5. He who “rides the heavens to help you…is your refuge and underneath are the everlasting arms…” (Deuteronomy 33:26-27).
Conclusion:
1. These truths should leave us in awe of such an awesome God!
2. For this, we ought always to call on the name of the Everlasting God (Genesis 21:33) and find our refuge in His everlasting arms (Deuteronomy 33:27)!
