Scripture Reading: Matthew 22:23–33
Introduction
A. When the Sadducees challenged Jesus on the resurrection, He said that their error stemmed from ignorance of God’s word (Matthew 22:29).
B. Many have perished due to a lack of knowledge of God’s word (Hosea 4:6; 2 Samuel 6:7; Romans 10:1–4), and so it is to this day.
Discussion
I. A good knowledge of God’s word is profitable for many things.
A. It keeps us from sinning against God (Matthew 4:1–11; Psalms 119:11).
B. It leads us to eternal life (John 6:68; Luke 10:26–28).
C. It will benefit our homes (Matthew 19:1–9; Ephesians 6:4).
D. It gives us peace in tribulation and an undying hope (Matthew 22:29–33; John 14:27–28).
E. It has the power to sanctify us (John 17:14–19; 8:31–32).
II. Ignorance of the Scriptures is a serious problem.
A. It makes one fail to see the true power of God (Matthew 22:29; 1 Corinthians 1:18; Ephesians 1:19–23; 2:4–7).
B. If I am ignorant of the Word, I cannot be fruitful in God’s kingdom (Matthew 13:18–23; John 15:1–10).
C. If I am ignorant of the Word, it will judge me one day (John 5:24; 12:47–48; Mark 8:38).
Conclusion
A. Many in this world are still living in error because they do not know the Scriptures or God’s power (Romans 1:20; Acts 17:30).
B. We need to make certain that we are not ignorant of the Scriptures and that others around us (especially our families) have every opportunity to know them as well.
