Learning from the Beginning (Part 1)

Scripture Reading: Genesis 1:1-5   |   Spanish/Español

Introduction

A. While some may doubt the information found in the early chapters of Genesis, the truth is that they are the only credible witness we have to some important pieces of our history.

B. From these opening chapters we can learn valuable lessons that can make us better servants of the God who made us.

Discussion

I. We learn about our God.

A. Creation itself is a testimony to God’s supreme power (Romans 1:18-20; Psalm 19:1-3; 33:6-9).

B. We learn about God’s love and grace in the preparations that He made for man (Genesis 1:1-30; 2:18-24).

C. We learn about God’s judgment (Genesis 3:16-19).

D. We learn about God’s mercy (Genesis 3:14-15).

E. We learn about God’s patience (Genesis 6:3; 1 Peter 3:19-20).

F. We learn about God’s faithfulness (Genesis 3:15; 8:21).

II. We also learn about our adversary.

A. We learn that he is subtle (Genesis 3:1; 2 Corinthians 11:3,13-15).

B. He has been known to twist God’s Word (Genesis 3:1-4).

C. He hates man and desperately wants to destroy us.

D. We learn that he is divisive (Genesis 3:12; 1 Corinthians 1:10-13).

E. We learn that his doom is sealed (Genesis 3:15; Matthew 25:41).

F. We learn that we can overcome him with God on our side (Genesis 3:14-15; 1 Peter 5:8-9; James 4:7-8).

Conclusion

As we study the Scriptures (particularly the OT), may we always take the time to learn the lessons that they offer to teach us (Romans 15:4).
