Introduction
A. Was Juliet right? Is there really nothing at all in a name?
B. We take great care in choosing names for our children.
C. The name of Jesus was magnified in the city of Ephesus on Paul’s third journey (Acts 19:17).
Discussion
I. The name of Jesus made a big impact on this city.
A. Several in Ephesus were baptized in the name of Jesus (Acts 18:24–26; 19:1–4; cf. 2:38; 10:48; 22:16).
B. Great miracles were performed there in Jesus’ name (Acts 19:11–12).
C. Luke shows that merely invoking the name was not sufficient of itself (Acts 19:13–15; cf. Luke 9:49–50).
II. There is always power and authority in the name of Jesus.
A. Paul often begins commands with the name (1 Corinthians 1:10; 5:4–5; 2 Thessalonians 3:6).
B. We pray in the Lord’s name (John 16:26–27).
C. Paul says that the child of God is to do all things in the name of the Lord (Colossians 3:17).
D. We are justified in His name (1 Corinthians 6:11).
Conclusion
A. Paul tells us that God has exalted the name of Jesus so that all will bow at the name some great day (Philippians 2:9–11).
B. The name of Jesus left an indelible mark upon the city of Ephesus, and it still has the same power today.
