Heaven and Hell

by Roby Ellis

[Scripture Reading: Matthew 25:46]

Introduction

A. There are probably a lot of things about eternity that we lack the experience to understand, but God has given us some brief glimpses into the life that awaits us beyond this mortal existence.

B. There are several people who claim to have seen heaven and have told of its wonder, but wouldn’t you rather hear about it from some-one you know has been there? Let’s listen to His words about it.

Discussion

I. Jesus says that heaven and hell are for real.

A. He speaks of them as places that have been prepared for human habitation (John 14:1-3; Matthew 25:41).

B. Heaven is a place of comfort (Revelation 21:4).

C. Hell is a place of torment and separation from God (Luke 16:24-26; 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9).

D. These are no fairy tales: we shall all be there ourselves one day (2 Peter 1:16; 3:10; Hebrews 10:37)!

II. Jesus says that heaven and hell are forever.

A. He describes heaven as a place of eternal rest (John 3:16; cf. 2 Corinthians 5:1; 1 Peter 1:4; Revelation 7:16-17; 1 Thessalonians 4:15-18).

B. He describes hell as a place of eternal torment (Matthew 25:41,46; Mark 9:43; 2 Thessalonians 1:9).

Conclusion

A. Jesus also teaches us that heaven is for everyone (John 14:2; 17:24; cf. 2 Peter 3:9; 1 Timothy 2:4).

B. Even though the Father wants all of us in heaven, no one will get there by accident. If we are to reach that destination, we must go the only way that the Father has provided—Jesus (John 14:6).
