Drifting (PM)

Scripture Reading:  Hebrews 2:1–4

Introduction

A.  From his acquaintance with the sea, Paul knew a thing or two about drifting (Acts 27; 2 Corinthians 11:25).

B.  There are many souls that have drifted slowly from the faith.

Discussion

I.  What causes a ship to drift?

A.  One possible cause is distraction (Matthew 14:30).

B.  Another cause is weariness (Ephesians 5:14).

C.  Yet another is turbulence (Acts 27:12–14).

II.  The signs of drifting often go unnoticed.

A.  When you drift, you never go upstream (Matthew 7:14).

B.  You will stop seeing the markers that identify the right way (Acts 14:22; 2 Corinthians 10:1–6).

C.  You will lose contact with your guide (Psalms 51:12).

III.  Fortunately there is a solution for drifting.

A.  First you have to regain your bearings (Psalms 119:105).

B.  Next we must get going and refuse to stop (Galatians 6:9).

C.  Look constantly to your Guide (Jeremiah 10:23; Hebrews 12:2).

D.  You may need to send out a distress signal (Matthew 14:30).

E.  To prevent drifting further, you need a strong anchor (Hebrews 6:19).

Conclusion

A.  Drifting is a dangerous thing, and if uncorrected, it is certain to end in shipwreck.

B.  If you have been drifting, take this as your warning to come back to God before it is too late.
