Scripture Reading: James 1:21–27
Introduction
A. James encourages the scattered tribes of Israel to be “doers of the word,” not just “hearers only” (James 1:21–27).
B. The imagery use here is that of people at a performance, where some work diligently while the audience sits and enjoys the show.
Discussion
I. In the Lord’s church today, there is a great need for doers.
A. Jesus called for doers (Matthew 7:21–27).
B. Doers have a great effect on the church (Acts 4: 36, 11:26).
C. Without doers in the church, there would be little teaching, little fellowship, little evangelism, and little spirit in our worship.
II. What does a doer do?
A. A doer monitors himself daily (James 1:22–25).
B. A doer bridles his tongue (James 1:26).
C. A doer helps his brethren in need (James 1:27a).
D. A doer keeps himself unspotted (James 1:27b, Romans 12:2).
E. A doer listens to God’s Word and seeks to fulfill it (cf. Ezra 7:10).
III. What does one have to do to be a doer?
A. Find a doer, and do what he is doing (Titus 2:4–6).
B. Find out for yourself what God would have you to do, and do it will all your heart (Colossians 3:17, 23–24).
C. Look for opportunities to serve.
Conclusion
A. Jesus showed that sins of omission will be just as detrimental to ours souls as will sins of commission (Matthew 25:41–46).
B. When it comes to God’s Word, are you a hearer or a doer?
