[Scripture Reading: John 8:34-36]
Introduction
A. Adolf Hitler promised Germany “work, freedom, and bread,” but what he gave them was something radically different.
B. There are some who peddle freedom today which is really just despotism in disguise (2 Peter 2:17-22).
I. The devil will promise you freedom from all restraint.
A. We first need to understand that not all restraint is necessarily bad (Jeremiah 5:22).
B. The devil will promise you the freedom to live however you please (2 Peter 2:10-16; Genesis 3:1-5; cf. Ecclesiastes 11:9-10).
C. The devil will promise you love on your terms (Judges 16; 2 Samuel 11-12; 1 Kings 11:1-4; cf. 2 Corinthians 6:14).
D. The devil will promise you absolute freedom of religion (cf. 1 Corinthians 1:10; Matthew 15:9; Leviticus 10:1-2; 1 Chronicles 15:13).
II. The Lord delivers true freedom.
A. God has proven His power to free men numberless times (2 Peter 2:5-9).
B. If you wish to be free from God’s restraints, you must submit to another master (Romans 6:16-23).
C. If you want the freedom that the Lord offers, you must accept it on His terms (Romans 6:1-7).
Conclusion
A. There are a lot of people who have bought a counterfeit promise of liberty (John 8:33).
B. The devil will promise everything, but he never delivers it.
C. The only place to find genuine liberty is in Christ.
