Bearing One Another’s Burdens

by Roby Ellis

[Scripture Reading: Ecclesiastes 4:7-12]

Introduction

A. The fact that there is strength in numbers explains many of the things God has done since the creation of Eve (Genesis 2:18-24).

B. It should be a great comfort to all of us to know that we are not in this fight alone; as soldiers we are all in this together.

I. We have a responsibility to encourage the weak and the faint.

A. Those who are weak in the faith should be able to depend on their stronger brethren (Romans 14:1; Galatians 6:1).

B. Those who are faint should be able to rely on those whose are fresh in their strength (Exodus 17:8-13; Numbers 11:14-17; 2 Samuel 21:15-18; Galatians 6:8-9).

C. When we encourage one another, we fulfill the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2; cf. John 13:34; Ephesians 4:2-3).

II. We need to be open with one another about our struggles.

A. This means that we need to confess our sins to one another (James 5:16).

B. We should learn to both offer prayers for one another and to solicit them (Romans 1:9; 15:30; Ephesians 1:16; 6:18-20).

C. We all contend with beasts in life (1 Corinthians 15:28).

Conclusion

A. Why are we reluctant to share our burdens with each other? Is it fear or pride or because we don’t understand the importance?

B. What happens when we start learning to share our burdens? It could lead to forgiveness, the healing of old wounds, family bonding, and even the salvation of erring souls (James 5:16-20).
