Proverbs 22:6, 15
Introduction:
1. While some degree of grace should be extended for youthful mistakes, the practice of dismissing or ignoring youthful sin is destructive and sinful.
2. We owe it to our children to hold them accountable and correct them.
Discussion:
I. Common Excuses for Youths
A. “Boys will be boys”
B. “It’s just the terrible twos or threes.”
C. “He/she has issues/disadvantages.”
II. The Danger to Children
A. Children need discipline and training, not excuses (Genesis 18:19; Deuteronomy 6:6-7; Proverbs 22:6, 15; 29:15, 17; Ephesians 6:4).
B. Without discipline, children will rebel against God and man.
C. This leads to their destruction (Proverbs 13:24; 19:18; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9).
III. The Danger to Parents/Guardians
A. Though children will come of age and be accountable for their sins, parents have culpability if they fail to train their children.
B. Failure to discipline/train children is tantamount to hating and destroying them (Proverbs 3:12; 13:24; 19:18; 23:13-14).
C. Failure to discipline/train children is failure to keep His commands.
1. Sin= Gr. hamartia: “to miss a mark” (Thayer, Strong, Mounce) and is a transgression of God’s law (1 John 3:4).
2. Keeping His commands shows our love for Him (John 14:15).
3. Therefore, failing to train our children manifests a lack of love for God and our children, and it is therefore sinful (Matthew 22:37).
Conclusion:
1. Our children will eventually give account for their actions, and we will likewise give account for ours (2 Corinthians 5:10).
2. Though some will rebel despite our best efforts, we will be responsible if we fail to give our best efforts.
3. Therefore, like all excuses, saying “They’re just kids” will excuse no one.
