Scripture Reading: Luke 4:31-37
Introduction
A. Because we are so limited in the flesh, we must depend on God for direction in all things (Jeremiah 10:23).
B. The unique thing about Christ’s church is that it seeks His authority in everything that it practices and teaches.
Discussion
I. Most individuals recognize the need for authority.
A. Without it there would be chaos (Romans 13:1-5).
B. The Jews recognized the need for it, but not always the right authority (John 1:19-25; Matthew 21:23; Acts 9:1-2).
C. Roman officials saw the need for it (Matthew 8:9).
D. Even angels need authority (Jude 8-11).
II. Jesus has been granted all authority.
A. He has all authority in heaven and on earth (Matthew 28:18-20, 7:29).
B. He has authority to judge all men (John 5:26-27).
C. He has authority to forgive sins (Matthew 9:1-8).
D. He has all authority in the church (Ephesians 1:20-23).
III. We must seek heaven’s authority for all that we do.
A. We must seek it in the home (Matthew19:4-5).
B. We must seek it in the church (1 Timothy 3).
C. We must seek it relative to salvation (Hebrews 5:9).
D. We must seek it relative to worship (1 Corinthians 11:20-29).
Conclusion
A. Jesus gives us the authority to be God’s children (John 1:12).
B. Have you submitted to the authority of Jesus?
