James 1:1-8
Introduction:
1. The book of James is referred to as the Proverbs of the New Testament due to its simple, practical, down to earth teachings for everyday living.
2. This series of lessons is intended to help us be sure that our faith is deeply engrained in our inner being as we face the challenges of our world.
Discussion:
I. The Certainty of Trials
A. James said “when” not “if” you fall into trials (1:2).
B. This is a common bible theme (Matthew 5:10-12; Luke 6:22; 2 Timothy 3:12).
C. The most important matter is how we react (James 1:2, 12; Romans 5:3).
II. The Purpose of Trials
A. Knowing their purpose will go a long way in empowering us to handle them graciously.
B. God does not allow suffering to no purpose; He uses it to promote:
1. Patience leading to maturity and completion (James 1:3-4)
2. Endurance leading to character which creates hope (Romans 5:3-4)
3. Proven faithfulness leading to praise, honor, and glory upon Christ’s return (1 Peter 1:6-9)
4. Humility leading to dependence on Him (2 Corinthians 12:7-10).
III. Wisdom to Grow Through Trials
A. Such a mindset demands wisdom that transcends our mortal minds.
B. When these trials turn us to God, He promises to grant the wisdom we need to conquer them (James 1:5; 1 Kings 3:5-9)
C. We must fully trust this promise to receive the blessing (James 1:6-7).
D. Doubting God produces inaction and rebellion (James 1:8; Numbers 14:1-5; Hebrews 3:12, 16-19; 4:2).
Conclusion:
1. The book of James will bring us face to face with our true selves repeatedly.
2. This is imperative as only when we see things as they are can we make them as they ought to be.
As we go through this series, let us be sure we are super-faithful rather than superficial.
