[Scripture Reading: Ecclesiastes 5:13-20]

Introduction

A. For those who entered the Nazi work camps during World War II, nothing remained of their former lives.

B. When we leave this world, what will we take with us of all that was dear to us in this life?

C. Why should we spend so much of our time and effort to enrich ourselves in a currency that will soon be worthless?

Discussion

I. There are a great many things that we cannot take along.

A. We obviously cannot take our material possessions (1 Timothy 6:5-10; cf. Luke 12:20; Job 1:21).

B. We cannot take our mortal bodies (1 Corinthians 15:50-51; 1 Timothy 6:6-8).

C. We cannot take our titles of distinction, for all will be equal then (Revelation 20:12; 1 Peter 1:17).

II. There are some things that we can take with us.

A. We can take ourselves (2 Corinthians 5:1; Ezekiel 33:9).

B. We can take our works (Revelation 14:13; 1 Timothy 5:24).

C. We can take our families (Hebrews 11:7; Proverbs 23:13-14) and our brethren (James 5:19-20).

Conclusion

A. Unless the Lord’s return prevents it, death will come to every one of us (1 Kings 2:2; Ecclesiastes 8:8).

B. There is no escaping death, and there will be no appeals after the verdict of that great Day. Are you ready?
