John 3:16-21; 1 John 3:1-3
Introduction:
1. Abraham Maslow is famous for his hierarchy of needs promoting human thriving.
2. After physiological needs (food, shelter, etc.), and safety needs, the third most important need for human thriving is belonging (love, affection, family, etc.).
3. Though we live in a society that has more physiological advantages than ever, we still see widespread despair, so what are people lacking in our pampered society?
Discussion:
I. The Meaning of Life
A. We are contrasting two primary worldviews in this discussion: 1) the biblical worldview, and 2) the naturalist worldview including atheism and agnosticism.
B. The biblical worldview says humanity is created in God’s image, and for this reason we are to be treated with love, dignity, and respect (Genesis 1:26-28; 9:5-7; John 3:16).
C. The naturalist worldview strips this inherent value from humanity.
II. The Despair of Naturalism
A. Beliefs have implications, none greater than that of our origin, nature, and purpose.
B. Naturalists readily admit their beliefs render life meaningless (See The Despair of Atheism, Apologetics Press).
C. The quote in the title appeared six times in Madalyn Murray O’Hare’s writings found after her death, displaying the sad implications of her worldview.
III. Somebody Somewhere Somehow Does Love You
A. Sadly, O’Hare, like millions who follow her dogma, never knew that Somebody, somewhere, somehow did in fact love her.
B. He loved her so much He gave His Son that she may be His daughter (Isaiah 56:5; Hosea 1:10-11; John 1:12-14; 3:16; Romans 8:14; 2 Corinthians 6:17-18; Galatians 3:26; 4:6; 1 John 3:1-3).
C. Sadly, she rejected His love and influenced millions of others to do the same.
Conclusion:
1. The task we have is to embrace and promote the love of God lavished on us in Christ.
2. Somebody you and I know echoes O’Hare’s desperate plea for this love, so we must give our all to extend His gracious offer to them.
Further Food for Thought
1. Do you know anyone who may be experiencing this sense of loveless despair?
2. How prepared do you feel you are to explain the folly of their position?
3. What would you do to become better prepared to fulfill this need? (1 Peter 3:15)
