What I'd Like to Know Is: Why Do We Not Fellowship Denominations? (AM)

Romans 16:17-18

Introduction:

1.  The majority view is that sincerity is the only essential religious concern.

2.  Doctrinal diversity is celebrated in most religious bodies, so our insistence on pursuing doctrinal unity is strongly criticized.

Discussion:

I.  Denominationalism Defined

A.  Denominationalism= “The system and ideology founded on the division of the religious population into numerous ecclesiastical bodies, each stressing particular values or traditions and each competing with the other in the same community under substantial conditions of freedom” (Westminster Dictionary of Church History).

B.  At its core, denominationalism implies division.

II.  Unity Commended and Commanded

A.  God treasures unity (Psalms 133:1; Jeremiah 32:39; John 17:20-21).

B.  He commands us to treasure it too (Ephesians 4:1-3; Philippians 1:27; 2:1-2).

C.  He fashioned a single, unified body/church (Matthew 16:18; Ephesians 2:16; 4:4-6; 1 Corinthians 10:17; 12:12-13, 20; Colossians 3:15).

III.  Division Condemned

A.  God abhors division (Proverbs 6:16-19; 1 Corinthians 1:10; Romans 16:17).

B.  For this, He warns against divergent teachings/doctrines (Acts 20:30; Romans 16:17; Galatians 1:6-9; 1 Timothy 6:3-5; 2 Peter 2:1-3).

IV.  Denominationalism Condemned

A.  God clearly denounces division among His people.

B.  Denominationalism, by definition, divides God’s people.

C.  If God condemns division, He condemns denominationalism.

Conclusion:

1.  Christians are to strive for unity (Ephesians 4:1-3; 1 Corinthians 1:10; Philippians 1:27-2:2).

2.  We are to avoid the unfruitful works of darkness (Ephesians 5:11; 1 John 1:6).

3.  Denominationalism is clearly a work of darkness.

4. This is why we do not have fellowship with denominations.
