Matthew 19:13-15
Introduction:
1. These three questions came from some of our children in the congregation.
2. It is as good now as it was in Jesus’ days when the children “come to Him.”
Discussion:
I. How Did God Come Alive and On Earth?
A. As for His coming alive, there was never a time when God did not live (Exodus 3:13-14; John 1:1).
B. As for His coming to live on earth, this occurred in the birth of Jesus (John 1:14; Matthew 1:18-25).
II. How Does He Eat and Drink?
A. God is Spirit (John 4:24), and a spirit does not have flesh and bones (Luke 24:37-39).
B. He has no physical needs because He is the source of all material things (Acts 17:24-25).
C. So, God neither eats nor drinks.
III. How Can We Bridge the Generation Gap?
A. This is harder for the children than the adults because adults have already been children.
B. There are a few principles to keep in mind:
1. Accept our roles (Romans 12:3-8; Titus 2:1-8).
2. The older should not look down on the youth but examine character (1 Timothy 4:12-16).
3. The younger must respect the wisdom and authority of the older (Ephesians 6:1-3; 1 Peter 5:5a).
4. The older must likewise respect the reason for their authority (Ephesians 6:4; Titus 2:1-8; 1 Peter 5:1-4).
5. Ultimately, we all must clothe ourselves with humility, knowing Whom we serve (1 Peter 5:5b).
Conclusion:
1. How encouraging it is to have such thoughtful children in our midst.
2. May we never discourage their quests for knowledge of God but always fuel it.
3. May we strive for the mutual respect of God’s children, regardless of our age or role.
