2 Corinthians 5:18-21
Introduction:
1. This word describes God’s work of fixing what we broke in the garden.
2. Subsequent words will demonstrate the means He used to do this work.
Discussion:
I. What It Means
A. Literally a change or exchange; in the NT from enmity to friendship.
B. “Bringing together two parties that are estranged or in dispute” (HIBD).
C. “Restoration to favor” (Mounce)
D. “A change from a state of enmity…to one of friendship” (Zodhiates)
II. What This Teaches Us About God and Humanity
A. Considering the cause of and solution for our estrangement from God teaches us much about ourselves and Him.
B. This reality brings us face to face with our rebellious tendencies and their consequences (Jeremiah 17:9; Romans 3:10-12; 7:15-23; Colossians 1:21).
C. It also proves our helplessness (Romans 7:24; Ephesians 2:11-12; Colossians 1:21).
D. This vividly demonstrates God’s love, mercy, kindness, and grace upon us (Romans 7:25; Ephesians 2:13-18; Colossians 1:19-22).
E. That the injured party took the initiative and made reconciliation for His enemies is simply astounding (Romans 5:10ff; 2 Corinthians 5:18-21).
F. Everything we read in the Scriptures from Genesis 3 to Revelation 22 is the story of God reconciling us to Himself.
III. How These Truths Should Shape Our Lives
A. First, we must be honest about our own shortcomings; no one fixes what they do not admit is broken (Romans 12:3; 2 Corinthians 13:5; 1 John 1:8-10).
B. Flowing from this, we must humble ourselves (James 4:6-10) and be evermore thankful to Him (Ephesians 5:20; Colossians 3:15-17).
C. Remember that reconciliation, as all spiritual blessings, is enjoyed only in Christ (Ephesians 1:3; 2 Corinthians 5:17-18; Ephesians 2:13; Colossians 1:20).
D. Recognize that the injured party (God in this instance) sets the terms of entering Christ and reconciliation (Galatians 3:26-27; Romans 6:3-4; Acts 2:38).
E. Respond with the obedience of faith (Romans 1:5; 16:25-26; 2 Corinthians 5:15).
Conclusion:
1. As with all broken relationships, the injured party had to be willing to forgive.
2. Thankfully, God is willing and worked tirelessly to reconcile us.
3. If you are estranged from God, be reconciled before it is too late.
