Theological Word Studies: Heaven and Hell (PM)

Romans 2:6-10

Introduction:

1. As we conclude this series of theological word studies, it seems fitting to ponder the two eternal choices set before all of humanity.

2. This life is the time of decision, so it is imperative we make the right decision.

Discussion:

I. What It Means

A. Heaven: Gr. Ouranos: “the heavens, skies (Matthew 5:18; et. al.), the peculiar seat and abode of God, angels, glorified spirits (Mounce); the place where sorrow and suffering can never reside (Revelation 21:4).

B. Hell: two Greek terms in the NT describe hell:

1. Gehenna: Hebrew origin; the valley of the son of Hinnom, around Jerusalem (Joshua 15:8; 18:16; Jeremiah 19:2); two keys to its symbolism.

a. Known for child sacrifice (2 Chronicles 28:1-3; Jeremiah 7:30-31).

b. It became the refuse dump for Jerusalem kept burning at all times to avoid pestilence (Mounce; cf. Jeremiah 7:32-34)

2. Tartarus: Greek origin; “regarded by the ancient Greeks as the abode of the wicked dead, where they suffer punishment for their evil deeds” (Thayer)

II. What It Teaches About God and Humanity

A. God lets us choose our destiny (Deuteronomy 30:15-20; Romans 2:6-10).

B. He made the choices clear, so we are without excuse (Romans 1:18-25; 2 Timothy 3:14-16; 2 Peter 1:3-11; 2:1-9).

C. When this life is over, the choice is final (Luke 16:19-31).

D. No one can choose not to choose (2 Corinthians 5:10; Revelation 20:13).

III. How These Truths Should Shape Our Lives

A. The contrast could not be sharper (Mark 9:43-48; 1 Peter 1:3-5).

B. Knowing the vast chasm between our two options, we must cherish the heavenly treasures rather than the earthly (Matthew 6:19-21; Luke 9:24-25).

C. We must revere and serve God rather than human beings (Matthew 10:28; 16:24-26; Acts 4:19; 5:29; Galatians 1:10; 1 Thessalonians 2:4).

Conclusion:

1. God has given us tremendous hope through the gift of His Son.

2. This hope is the anchor of our souls (Hebrews 6:19-20), but only if we choose it.

3. As Willie White wrote, “Life with Christ is an endless hope; without Him it is a hopeless end.”

4. Heaven will surely be worth it all (Romans 8:18; 2 Corinthians 4:14-18).
