Genesis 2:8-17
Introduction:
1. We begin in Eden because it is the place of humanity’s beginning.
2. From this study, we stand to learn much about God’s nature and will, making it easier to understand upcoming studies.
Discussion:
I. The Meaning and Makeup of Eden
A. Eden= “pleasure (BDB); “luxuries, luxurious” (LBD)
B. Therefore, the literal meaning is “garden of pleasure/luxuries.”
C. In Isaiah 51:1-3, God evoked Eden to describe the comfort He would give His people despite prior misfortunes.
II. What It Teaches Us About God and Humanity
A. Upon completion of His created order, God looked and saw that everything was “very good” (Genesis 1:31).
B. He gave humanity the best of His “very good” creation, including potential for endless life (Genesis 2:8-16; 3:22).
C. Additionally, He interacted with them in Eden (Genesis 2:18-22; 3:8).
D. God’s intentions towards humanity have always been benevolent.
E. Human life is the most highly valued life on earth (cf. John 3:16; Romans 5:10; 8:32).
III. How These Truths Should Shape Our Lives
A. First, it should generate faith/trust in God (Acts 14:17; 2 Timothy 1:12).
B. Second, it should prompt greater love for God (Matthew 22:37; 1 John 4:19).
C. Third, it should produce greater love for our fellow man (Matthew 22:39; 1 John 4:7-12, 19-21).
D. Fourth, such faith and love will produce faithfulness in our lives (John 14:15, 21-24; 1 John 3:1-3; 5:1-3).
E. Finally, knowing God’s love for us and the value He placed on us empowers endurance (Romans 5:3-5; 8:24-25; 2 Corinthians 4:7-10, 15-18).
Conclusion:
1. What a powerful word God chose to express His care for us.
2. God’s complete benevolence and trustworthiness are on full display in His placement of Adam and Eve in Eden.
3. What power such knowledge gives us as we pursue righteousness.
4. It is up to us to embrace the reality expressed in this beautiful reality.
