The Lord's Anointed Reigns (PM)

Psalm 2

Introduction:

1.  This Psalm often graces the NT (Acts 4:25-28; 13:33; Hebrews 1:5; 5:5).

2.  Its central focus is man’s futile attempt to thwart the reign of the Christ.

Discussion:

I.  The Kings’ Rage Against the King (vv. 1-3)

A.  Sinful men often war against God’s designs (John 3:19-20; 15:18-21).

B.  These rulers conspired to prevent and destroy the King’s reign (Mark 3:6; Matthew 22:16; 26:3-4, 14-16; John 19:15; Acts 4:27).

II.  The King’s Derision Against the Kings (vv. 4-9)

A.  Such efforts to thwart God’s designs are laughable (Psalms 37:12-13).

B.  In their effort to thwart God’s purposes, they unwittingly fulfilled them (Acts 2:23; 3:17-18; 4:28; 13:27-29; 1 Corinthians 2:6-9; 1 Peter 2:6-8).

C.  Powerful men vigorously resist God’s designs, but His purposes cannot be thwarted (Job 42:2; Proverbs 19:21; Isaiah 46:10; Daniel 4:34-35).

D.  The King’s decree was assured by His might (vv. 7-9).

III.  The King’s Invitation and Assurance (vv. 10-12)

A.  Still, He gives these mutinous rebels an opportunity to avoid the terror named above (cf. Luke 23:34; Acts 2:14-41; 3:11-26).

B.  Such must abandon their folly, be wise, receive instruction, and serve the Lord with sincerity (vv. 10-11).

C.  If they turn from hatred for the Anointed One and pay homage to the same, they may avoid His wrath (vs. 12a).

D.  Blessed is the one who trusts in Him (cf. Jeremiah 17:7; Hebrews 11:6).

Conclusion:

1.  The Lord purposed humanity’s redemption from eternity (Genesis 3:15; Acts 2:23; Ephesians 3:8-11; 1 Peter 1:17-21).

2.  Satan tried to use sinful men to thwart that purpose (Acts 4:27), but God used his plots to fulfill His eternal purpose (Acts 4:28; Hebrews 2:14-15).

3.  Every knee will one day bow to King Jesus (Isaiah 45:23; Romans 14:11; Philippians 2:10-11), so let us do so now and receive the promised blessings.
