The Crucified Life: Taking Up Our Cross (AM)

Matthew 16:21-28

Introduction:

1.  Jesus was clear He had to die to redeem sinful humanity (Matthew 16:21-23; 20:17-19; John 13:18-19; cf. Matthew 26:36-46; Hebrews 5:7-9).

2.  He was equally clear that to follow Him one must follow Him in bearing our own cross (Matthew 16:24-26; Luke 14:27; Acts 14:22; Romans 6:3-7).

Discussion:

I.  If Anyone Would Come After Me

A.  Most people do not desire to follow Jesus (John 3:19-20).

B.  Many who begin do not finish (Luke 8:11-15; 14:27-33; Matthew 7:13-14).

II.  Let Him Deny Himself

A.  Selfish desires drive sinful behaviors (James 1:13-15; 1 John 2:15-16).

B.  Denying self is essential to faithful discipleship (Philippians 2:4-8; 19-21).

III.  And Take Up His Cross

A.  The cross is emblematic of suffering and shame.

B.  Jesus suffered this pain and shame for our sins (Isaiah 53:4-9; Hebrews 12:2; 1 Peter 2:22-25).

C.  It befits a disciple of Christ to bear shame and suffering for Him (John 15:18-20; 1 Peter 2:21; 4:12, 12-14).

IV.  And Follow Me

A.  We must follow His example even to the death (Philippians 2:5ff; 1 Peter 2:20-21; 1 John 3:16; Revelation 2:10).

B.  In so doing, we will be where He is (John 12:25-26; 14:1-4; Revelation 14:13).

Conclusion:

1.  Jesus gave His life to grant us eternal life (Matthew 20:28; John 10:10-15).

2.  For His indescribable gift (2 Corinthians 9:15), we are to follow Him (John 12:26).

3.  Following Him is costly (John 15:18-21; 1 Peter 3:14-17; 4:1-2).

4.  Not following Him is more costly (Luke 9:23-26; Acts 3:23; Hebrews 10:29-31).

5. May we all be crucified with Christ that He may live in us (Galatians 2:20).
