1 John 5:14-21
Introduction:
1. As we bring this series to a close, we conclude with further assurance of the fellowship the Christian enjoys with the Lord (cf. 1:3).
2. This gives confidence in prayer, as we abandon our sinful disposition, because we are from God, in Christ, and have the knowledge He gives.
3. This confidence is the catalyst to a life of faithfulness we all must live.
Discussion:
I. Confidence in Prayer (vv. 14-15)
A. This is not a blank check to get what we want from God.
B. “According to His will…” is one of many qualifiers: in His name (James 5:14); in faith (James 1:6); persistent (Luke 18:1-8); unselfish (James 4:3; Matthew 26:36-46); coupled with holy living (James 5:16; 1 John 3:22).
II. Confidence in Resisting Sin (vv. 16-19)
A. The sin unto death…not unto death is perplexing for sure.
B. Three main interpretations prevail:
1. That it refers to a sin which brings physical death, so it is against praying for the dead.
2. That it parallels blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.
3. That it is the disposition of the antichrists who reject Jesus and persist in sinful behaviors (cf. Hebrews 6:4-6; 2 Peter 2:20-22).
C. The third seems most fitting as John repeatedly condemns persistence in sin (1:6-10; 2:3-6; 3:4-10, 24; 5:18).
D. The key is to embrace the penitent mindset of those born of God.
III. Confidence in Our Divine Rebirth (vv. 19-21)
A. The Gnostics claimed a special knowledge that granted salvation.
B. John closes with Christ’s gift of understanding to them confirming that they knew the true God and eternal life in Jesus His Son.
Conclusion:
1. This is one of the most encouraging books in the NT.
2. 1 John offers so many important things we may know about our eternal state due to Christ’s sacrifice and the revelation of His will.
3. The tests of our spiritual condition grant us the confidence we need.
4. If we administer those tests, fortify the areas where we excel, and correct the areas where we fail, our joy will be made full in Him.
