1 John 2:28-3:3
Introduction:
1. In this section, John describes the blessing of being children of God.
2. God’s love is beautifully displayed in calling us His children.
3. Being a child of God is a way of life, not just a state of mind.
4. If we abide in Him, we may have confidence at His return (2:28).
Discussion:
I. The First Mark of Those Born of God
A. In verse 29, John gives the first of his “born of Him” statements.
B. Righteousness aptly summarizes God’s nature (Psalms 11:7; 89:14).
C. The constant call of Scripture is for God’s children to replicate His character (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 16:20; Matthew 5:45, 48; Luke 6:35; Ephesians 5:1).
D. This flies in the face of the false prophets John battled with their claim that special knowledge is the key to spiritual wholeness.
E. The same rings true of today’s faith (mental assent) only doctrine.
II. Behold The Father’s Love
A. Behold what manner of love: an emphatic expression highlighting the unique quality of God’s love for us.
B. He gifted us this share in His family in Christ (John 1:11-13; Romans 8:14-17; 9:25-26; 2 Corinthians 6:18; Galatians 4:4; Ephesians 1:3-5; 2:19).
C. Knowing that we once stood as His enemies sheds further light on the magnificence of His love (Romans 5:8; Ephesians 2:1-3).
III. The Power of This Hope
A. Verse 2 shows the transcendence of these blessings:
1. These blessings will not end when life on earth ends.
2. Our essence will be transformed and vastly improved (cf. Philippians 3:20-21; 1 Corinthians 15:42-49).
B. This hope drives our pursuit of purity (vs. 3; 1 Corinthians 15:58; Ephesians 5:1; 1 Peter 1:13-17; 2 Peter 3:10-12).
Conclusion:
1. God’s love granted us indescribable blessings (2 Corinthians 9:15; Ephesians 3:19).
2. This hope is the engine that drives our pursuit of faithfulness.
3. May we consistently reflect on His immense love and stand firm.
