Ephesians 4:17-6:9
Introduction:
1. We have considered a range of things we must tidy up in pursuit of Christlikeness: hearts/minds, calendars, influences, attitudes, etc.
2. We conclude this series looking at day-to-day deeds we need to purge.
3. This is the end goal of the transformation of heart and mind.
Discussion:
I. The Consequences of Our Deeds (Romans 2:5-11; 6:23; 8:13; James 1:13-14)
A. Sadly, many professed believers deny the consequences of our deeds.
B. Scripture teaches that faith or lack thereof is measured by our deeds.
II. New Minds=New Walk (Ephesians 4:17-24)
A. Those named above think faith is a matter of the mind apart from the deeds of the body, often using Ephesians 2:8-9 as a prooftext.
B. Ephesians 2:10 and this entire section we are in says otherwise.
III. Contrasts of the Old and New Self (Ephesians 4:25-6:9)
A. From deceit to honesty (4:25)
B. From wrathful to temperate (4:26-27, 31-32-5:2)
C. From taker to giver (4:28)
D. From corrosive speech to constructive speech (4:29-30; 5:4)
E. From ungodly, lustful desires to godly desires (5:3-6)
F. From participating in darkness to dispelling darkness (5:7-14)
G. From walking in foolishness to walking in wisdom (5:15-17)
H. From mismanaged marriages to God honoring marriages (5:22-33)
I. From harmful parent-child relations to mutual beneficence (6:1-4).
J. From selfish employer-employee relationships to tending the needs and promoting the good of the other (6:5-9).
Conclusion:
1. Truly we could ponder a host of other deeds we need to tidy up.
2. This sample is a good start and hopefully sparks us to look closer yet to see where we need further refinements in our deeds.
