Reasons for Hope: The Strength God Supplies (PM)

Hebrews 4:14-16

Introduction:

1. A common thread among all the reasons for hope we have considered is the necessity of our pursuing faithfulness in our walk with the Lord.

2. Being that we got in the mess we were in through ignorance, weakness, and rebellion, how can we operate with confidence that we will overcome our adversary?

3. The answer lies in knowing and running to the source of our strength.

Discussion:

I. Owning Our Weakness

A. The first step in overcoming any deficiency is acknowledging its existence.

B. People do not seek help until they recognize their inability to handle a situation.

C. This is one of many reasons pride goes before a fall (Proverbs 16:18; 18:12).

D. We must properly appraise our condition to avoid this fall (Romans 12:3; 1 Corinthians 10:12).

II. Recognizing Strength in Weakness

A. It is not surprising that people are reluctant to admit vulnerability, but we must recognize that true spiritual strength depends on it.

B. Peter denied the Lord after boldly claiming he would not (Matthew 26:30-35, 69-75), but after his humbling, he became faithful for life (John 21:15-19; 2 Peter 1:13-15).

C. Paul sought relief from a troublesome “thorn in the flesh” but was left to deal with the issue because Christ’s strength is perfected in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:7-10; cf. Romans 5:3-5).

D. Surely this promotes meekness and dependence on God (Matthew 5:3-5; 18:1-4).

III. Approaching the Throne of Grace

A. Thankfully, God has not left us to just be weak and helpless.

B. He gives assurance of a way of escape in our trials and temptations (1 Corinthians 10:13).

C. In Hebrews 4:14-16, we learn of the great source of power God granted His people.

1. Our High Priest understands us (vs. 15; Psalms 78:38-39; 103:14; Matthew 9:36).

2. He pleads our case to God (vs. 14; 7:24-25; 9:24; Romans 8:34; 1 Timothy 2:5; 1 John 2:1).

3. This enables us to approach Him with confidence that He will supply what we need to endure to the end (vs. 16; 10:19-23; Ephesians 2:18; 3:12; 6:10ff).

Conclusion:

1. What a source of hope and peace and joy to know God will carry us to victory.

2. Let’s make sure we live in such a way as to enjoy this tremendous blessing.
