Psalm 23
Introduction:
1. Of all the metaphors used to describe the Lord and His people, perhaps none is as humbling and comforting as these found in Psalm 23.
2. In it we find the follower of God depicted as the sheep of His pasture and guests at His victory feast.
3. It is little wonder this psalm has provided perpetual comfort to the faithful.
Discussion:
I. Our Shepherd’s Nature (23:1)
A. The Lord= Yahweh: the existing One (Exodus 3:14; John 8:58)
B. He is the necessary Being, reinforcing our total dependence upon Him.
C. Not just any shepherd, my Shepherd; He cares for each of His sheep personally.
II. Our Need and His Provision (23:2-4)
A. Shepherd accents His caring hand (vv. 1-2).
1. Sheep are helpless (cf. Matthew 9:36).
2. Shepherds provide food, water, rest, and protection (Isaiah 40:11; Ezekiel 34:14-15; John 10:11-15).
3. Sheep only lie down when they feel safe and only drink from calm waters.
B. He restores my soul (vs. 3)
1. In Hebrew, soul means life; thus, He restores life (Ephesians 2:1; 1 Timothy 5:6).
2. He leads straying sheep back to safety (Psalms 19:7; Ezekiel 34:11-16; Luke 15:3-7).
3. The result is inner calm and peace (cf. Matthew 11:28-30; John 16:33).
4. This state is experienced only in the paths of righteousness (cf. Jeremiah 6:16; 10:23; Psalms 119:105; 1 John 1:7-2:2)
C. He dispels the fright of darkness (vs. 4).
1. Danger fades in His presence.
2. The rod was a weapon to bludgeon predators (cf. 1 Samuel 17:34-35)
3. The staff guided and rescued the sheep.
4. Even death loses its force (Psalms 139:8; Romans 8:31-39; 1 Corinthians 15:54-58).
III. Our Gracious Host (23:5-6)
A. He now shifts the analogy from oversight and protection to friendship and fellowship.
1. He prepares a table right in the face of our enemies (vs. 5).
2. This likely portrays a victory feast with vanquished rivals as captive guests (cf. Psalms 2:1-6; 37:12-13).
3. Anointing oil indicated being chosen, elect (Exodus 30:30; Leviticus 8:12)
B. His goodness and mercy are endless (vs. 6).
1. Table fellowship implied solidarity and covenant to the ancients (Matthew 9:10-11).
2. The Hebrew term translated “surely” also carries the idea of “only.”
3. For those faithful in covenant with God, goodness and mercy is all to expect from our Shepherd and Host!
Conclusion:
1. Though we too are helpless like sheep, we have the Good Shepherd to protect us and restore our souls (John 10:11-17).
2. Just like David, the Lord presents us victorious in the face of our enemies as our gracious host (2 Corinthians 2:13-17).
3. Life’s most important question is, have you made Him your Shepherd?
