New Testament Church: Praise in the Assembly (AM)

Ephesians 5:19 and Colossians 3:16

Introduction:

1. Praising God is an integral part of Christian living.

2. In this lesson, we intend to consider the theology of praise in hopes of renewing a deeper appreciation for this act of worship.

Discussion:

I. Why We Worship With Praise

A. It is predicated on God’s inherent worth and goodness (Psalms 48:1-2; 99:3-4; 117:1-2).

B. It is every person’s duty (Psalms 66:1-2; 96:1; 150:6).

C. The church exists to proclaim His excellencies (Ephesians 3:21; Hebrews 13:15; James 5:13; 1 Peter 2:9).

II. Essential Elements of Proper Praise

A. It is aimed “to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16).

B. It is a means of teaching about the Lord (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16).

C. It is a means of confessing Christ (Hebrews 13:15; Romans 15:9).

D. It flows from His Spirit and word (Ephesians 5:18-19; Colossians 3:16).

E. It is a proper response to the joy of God’s good deeds (James 5:13; 1 Chronicles 16:9; Psalms 105:2).

F. It is for mutual edification (1 Corinthians 14:15, 26; Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16).

G. It is reciprocal and congregational (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16).

III. The Weight of the Responsibility

A. The prevailing view today says sincerity of heart is the ultimate concern, bringing many innovations into worship: mechanical instruments, interpretive dance, light shows, dramas, etc.

B. Though sincerity of heart is unquestionably essential, it is not all that is needed for acceptable worship (John 4:24; Colossians 3:17).

C. Here is the full list of passages concerning praise in the NT (Matthew 26:30; Mark 14:26; Acts 16:25; Romans 15:9; 1 Corinthians 14:15, 26; Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16; Hebrews 2:12; 13:15; James 5:13).

D. In the NT, God has only authorized praise in song, and for this reason we only praise Him with our voices as He has said.

Conclusion:

1. Praise in worship is another pivotal part of the assembly of the Lord’s church.

2. He has given us clear directions pertaining to this great privilege.

3. The greatest privilege of all is knowing Christ joins us in praise (Hebrews 2:11-12).
