John 11:1-43
Introduction:
1. Whatever improvements we may enjoy in our earthly lives, the death of our bodies is still as certain as ever.
2. This makes the portrait in view even more profound and powerful.
Discussion:
I. The Distress in Bethany
A. Mary and Martha sent word of Lazarus’ sickness (11:1-3).
B. Jesus made it clear it would end in glory, not tragedy (11:4-5).
C. The disciples wanted Him to stay away because the Jews had recently tried to kill Him, but duty outweighed safety with Him (11:7-10, 16).
D. Jesus purposefully delayed going for two days (11:6-7).
II. The Declaration and Demonstration
A. God used this event to show Jesus’ power over death (11:4, 11-15).
B. Jesus offered comfort to Martha in the resurrection (11:17-23).
C. Then He pressed her faith to new heights declaring Himself to be the resurrection and the life (11:24—27).
D. He then demonstrated this truth for all to see (11:33-44).
III. The Conflicting Reactions
A. One would think such a demonstration of otherworldly power and compassion would generate faith in anyone.
B. But the Pharisees sought to kill Him because He threatened their power and position (11:45-57 esp. vs. 47-48; cf. 12:9-11).
C. Those who come to Him in faithfulness have the assurance of a resurrection to eternal life with Him (1 Corinthians 15:20-26; Hebrews 2:14—15).
Conclusion:
1. What comfort this word portrait supplies to all in Christ.
2. How do we see Jesus in light of His being the resurrection and life?
3. Will we yield to Him and live eternally or harden our hearts?
