Luke 8:1-3
Introduction:
1. Mary Magdalene is one of the best-known women in the NT.
2. She is described in all four gospels as a loyal disciple of Christ.
3. Her primary mentions are at Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection.
Discussion:
I. Her Background
A. Mary’s initial encounter with Jesus is not recorded.
B. Her town of origin, Magdala of Galilee, is all we know (Luke 8:2).
II. Her Radical Restoration
A. Some argue Mary is the sinful woman of Luke 7:35-50, but this cannot be known for certain.
B. We do know she was healed of infirmities, had seven demons cast out of her, and followed Jesus to the end (Luke 8:1-3).
III. Her Character and Ours
A. Three terms summarize Mary well: gratitude, loyalty, and love.
B. She showed gratitude by following and ministering to Him throughout His ministry (Luke 8:3; Mark 15:40-41).
C. She showed loyalty by being:
1. Frist, by her presence at the cross when Jesus was crucified (Matthew 27:55-56; Mark 15:40-41; John 19:25).
2. Next by being at the tomb when He was buried (Matthew 27:57-61).
D. She showed her love by going to anoint His body and weeping at the thought He was taken (Matthew 28:1; Mark 16:1; John 20:1, 11-17).
E. For this, He appeared to her first (Mark 16:9; John 20:11-18).
Conclusion:
1. Mary proves that Jesus can fix whatever is broken in our lives.
2. She also demonstrates how one ought to respond to such restoration.
3. Like Mary, we should live out gratitude, loyalty, and love for Him.
