Joshua 24:14-15
Introduction:
Joshua is one of the greatest examples of courageous leadership.
His role in salvation history cannot be overstated.
Discussion:
I. Big Shoes to Fill
A. Joshua was called to succeed Moses’ (Deuteronomy 31:1-3, 7; Numbers 27:18-23).
B. Their brief history had signaled difficulty ahead (Exodus 32:9; Deuteronomy 9:6).
II. Answering The Bell
A. Joshua proved up to the task:
He did not hesitate to conquer the land (Joshua 1:10-11; Numbers 14).
He had the loyalty of the people (Joshua 1:16-19).
He kept them on the path his whole life (Joshua 24:31; Judges 2:6-10).
B. Such leadership deserves a look at the qualities of the leader.
III. Qualities of Godly Leaders in Joshua
A. His trust in God:
This is always the starting point for faithful service.
He always trusted God’s promises (Numbers 13-14; Hebrews 11:30).
B. His prayerfulness:
He prayed when Israel was defeated at Ai (Joshua 7:6-9).
He prayed while battling five kings of the south (Joshua 10:9-14).
C. His obedience:
Israel’s blessings depended on obedience (Joshua 1:7-8).
Joshua championed obedience (Joshua 1:12-15; 11:15; 23:14-16).
D. His God-first mentality:
All the above flowed from this characteristic.
He would serve God despite what others chose (Joshua. 24:14-16).
Conclusion:
Joshua was appointed to one of the most monumental tasks in history.
Such a challenge demands careful selection of one to fulfill it.
Though we are not called to conquer the land of Canaan, we may conquer whatever challenges we face if we adopt Joshua’s God-first mentality.
