In the Shadow of the Apostles: The Establishment of the Church (AM)

Acts 2:22-47

Introduction:

1. In our last discussion, we saw the Spirit poured out on the apostles and how it grabbed the attention of the gathered masses.

2. Today, we ponder Peter’s sermon, the church’s beginning, and early activity.

Discussion:

I. The Evidence for Jesus the Christ

A. Attested by God: attested- “to show forth for public recognition, show forth the quality of an entity, demonstrate to be true” (BDAG)

B. Three terms describing God’s evidence:

1. Miracles: dynamis- “power, miracle, mighty means” (Mounce)

2. Wonders: teras- “something that astounds, transcendent” (BDAG)

3. Signs: semeion- “a distinguishing mark” (BDAG)

C. They saw that evidence, rejected it, and had Jesus killed (vv. 22-23).

D. God used their sinful predilection to His predetermined ends (vs. 23).

E. Peter gave three proofs of the chief sign, the resurrection (cf. Romans 1:4):

1. David prophesied such would occur (vv. 25-28; Psalms 16:8-11).

2. Eyewitnesses saw the resurrected Lord (vs. 32; cf. 1 Corinthians 15:5-6).

3. The Spirit was poured out as the crowd was then witnessing (vs. 33)

II. The Call of and Response to the Evidence

A. Peter then brought home the reality they crucified their king (vv. 34-36).

B. Those whose hearts were cut by the evidence sought redemption (vs. 37).

C. Peter set forth God’s simple plan and promise (vv. 38-39).

D. He continued his pleading with further revealed truths (vs. 40).

E. About 3000 souls received the word, were baptized, and added (vs. 41).

III. The Continuation of the Believers

A. Mutual edification is not restricted to fixed assembly times or special events; it is a way of life (vv. 42-47; cf. Matthew 28:20; Hebrews 3:13).

B. Continued/devoted: “to be earnest towards, constantly diligent” (Strong)

C. The source here is the apostles’ doctrine (cf. Ephesians 2:20) from which flows fellowship, breaking of bread, prayer, and serving one another (vv. 42, 44-46).

D. In short, they gave themselves to the Lord and then His people (2 Corinthians 8:3-5).

Conclusion:

1. The uniqueness of the Lord’s church is fully displayed here.

2. Christianity is still based on these same elements:

a. The truth of Jesus’ identity based on solid proofs given by God.

b. A call to abandon the old self and obey the gospel call.

c. The continuation of mutual edification drawn from the apostles teaching.
