Hebrews 10:26-39
Introduction:
1. The previous section called us to draw near, hold fast, and encourage one another.
2. This section warns of the dangers if we refuse to do so, and the language is jarring.
Discussion:
I. The Terror of Willful Sin (10:26-31)
A. The danger of shrinking back is falling into sinful ways (2:1-4; 3:12-19; 6:4-6; 10:26-31).
B. The language is strong as former confidence becomes fear and blessings turn to judgment.
C. The consequences are even greater than shirking Moses’ Law (2:1-3; 10:28-31).
II. The Call to Remember (10:32-34)
A. They needed to recall their former endurance to avoid wasting all their former sacrifices.
B. They had to recall why they had so sacrificed, a better, enduring, heavenly possession (10:34).
III. The Call to Endure (10:35-39)
A. For all this, they must not cast away their confidence with its rewards (10:35-36).
B. Though the struggles may seem to linger on, He will not prolong (10:37; Matthew 24:21-22).
C. The one who draws back from His service draws back from His good pleasure (10:38).
D. He closes this section with an expression of his confidence in them (10:39).
Conclusion:
1. The danger they faced now in full view, it was up to them to hold the line.
2. We face different challenges, but the danger is always the same.
3. Will we shrink back to destruction, or will we hold fast to the saving of our souls?
