Galatians 1:6-12
Introduction:
1. The lesson last week championed the greatest sin of our day, advocating that there is only one way to be saved and denying all roads lead to heaven (John 14:6).
2. In Galatians 1, Paul denies the “agree to disagree” mantra in strong language.
Discussion:
I. The Galatian Situation (Galatians 1:6; 4:21-31; 5:1-6)
A. Julius Caesar said the Gauls were “fickle in their resolves, fond of change, and not to be trusted.”
B. It seems the Galatians were quickly pivoting towards the Judaizers’ twisted “gospel.”
II. Paul’s Source of Authority (Galatians 1:1, 11-12)
A. Much of Paul’s first two chapters are spent defending his apostolic authority.
B. The purpose being to stand on God’s authority, not his own (1:1, 11-12; 1 Corinthians 14:37).
C. We must do the same (1 Peter 4:11; Acts 17;11).
III. Would Jesus Agree to Disagree? (Galatians 1:6-10)
A. Paul was clear there is only one gospel (1:6-7).
B. Furthermore, any who teach a different gospel:
1. Are agitators upending faith (Titus 1:9-11).
2. Who pervert/twist the gospel of Christ.
3. Are twice declared to be accursed: Gr. anathema, literally set apart for destruction.
C. The gospel of Christ is unchanged (Hebrews 13:8; Jude 3; John 14:6), so no, He does not agree to disagree as to His plan to redeem fallen man.
Conclusion:
1. If two of us teach a different gospel, only two options exist per Paul’s inspired word.
2. We both teach a different gospel than the apostles, and we are both accursed.
3. One of us teaches a different gospel, and that one is accursed.
4. Scripture deny a third way, so we must be sure we teach no other gospel.
